Drink local, think global at this sustainable wine bar in Midtown

Acheson Wine Company isn’t your typical winery — for one, its wine comes in reusable + sustainable glass bottles like high-end milk at the grocery store.

It’s all part of the Midtown winery’s central goal to reduce the amount of waste created by the wine industry. According to co-owner Loraine Scott, about two-thirds of all recycled wine bottles end up in the landfill, where it can take one million years for them to decompose.

The business also vints its wine in small batches of five-gallon stainless steel kegs to help save costs on corkage + production. Not only can the kegs be used time and time again, but they also allow Acheson to serve its wine — like the Midtown rosé + Solons sauvignon blanc — on tap at its wine bar located at 1629 19th St.

Pro tip: If you can’t make it in, there’s also the option to have its wine delivered to your doorstep.

The eco-friendly practices are also eco-nomical, making the wine cheaper to produce. Loraine explained that the money saved is reinvested back in the winemaker’s production, which is done in nearby Lodi by co-owner Steve Burch. It also benefits Sacramentans, as the local wine is cheaper to buy.

But the Midtown winery + wine bar thinks more than global: It’s a community-oriented, neighborhood shop where even dogs are described as regulars. Moreover, it’s owned by a family with roots in the River City wanting to uplift the Sac community.

Loraine shared that it’s important for Acheson to highlight + network with other local businesses, like Leash and Collar and Awkwood Things. She has also worked with regional organizations, like Wind Youth Services that provides a safe space for kids experiencing homeless.

“It’s very important to us to make good wine affordable — and to help save the world while we’re doing it,” Loraine said.
