Photography Month Sacramento — a month-long event highlighting the art of photography through exhibitions, workshops, lectures + more — returns to the River City for its sophomore run this April.

Led by the Midtown nonprofit Viewpoint Photographic Art Center, the collaborative event first launched in 2018. Organizers say the celebration was borne out of the belief that it is increasingly important to “encourage purposeful displays of photography by artists seeking to share a story or a moment of beauty.”

This year, five counties — Sacramento, Placer, Yolo, Nevada + El Dorado — will be able to participate, support each other, and collaborate on events that elevate the photographic medium for both professional practitioners + weekend hobbyists.

Here are five events in particular that caught our attention:

  • Bold to Abstract | All month long | Times vary | Jackrabbit Brewing Co., 1323 Terminal St., West Sacramento | Free | Subtitled “A Visual Journey Through the California Landscape,” see the work of established nature photographers from Sacramento.
  • Planet or Plastic? | Thurs., April 7-Sun., Aug. 7 | Times vary | The California Museum | Free+ | This exhibition tells the story of plastic — from its invention to its current mass consumption — across 70 photos, infographics + videos.
  • Guided Tour: Photography | Thurs., April 14 | 1 p.m. | Crocker Art Museum | Free+ | Take a deep focus view of the museum’s collection of photography + its related mediums.
  • Farm to Studio Photography Exhibit | Fridays-Sundays | 3-7 p.m. | Freeport Wine Country Inn, 8201 Freeport Blvd. | Free | Enjoy a glass of wine + experience 30 different images looking at the shapes, textures, and sometimes inherent humor of farm-fresh produce.
  • Photo Walks | Sun., April 10, Sat., April 23 + Sat., April 30 | Times vary | Locations vary | Free | Join the Nevada County Camera Club on photographic excursions through Nevada City and Grass Valley designed to help you capture the very best shots — even with your cell phone.
