With sunny skies + balmy temps forecasted for Sacramento this weekend, we thought it was a perfect time to say, “What’s SUP?” SUP, or standup paddleboarding, is best understood as a mix between surfing + kayaking, with its use of a one-sided paddle to get around on a board. You also don’t have to do that.

You can sit, kneel, or lay down on the board — heck, you can even do yoga on it as you let the water take you where it will. It’s been noted that paddleboarding — along with kayaking — is a very accessible sport + can be adapted to most people’s needs.

While it has roots in Hawaii + 19th century surfing culture in general, the sport has taken off as a flat water (surf lingo for water with no waves) activity in the past decade. Which is perfect for Sacramento, with our easily accessible rivers + lakes.

Here are some general tips on paddle boarding in The River City, from the best places to visit, where to rent, and how to get started.

Locations

  • Lake Natoma. A regulating reservoir for Folsom Lake, this 4-mile, steady-state lake is easily accessible from the Nimbus Hatchery or the Folsom State Recreation Area. Including part of the lower American River + areas like the Negro Bar Campground, there are several channels to explore and beaches to relax at.
  • Jenkinson Lake. Just over 60 miles from Downtown Sacramento, the calm, crystal clear waters of this lake make for a nice weekend getaway + are a great place for beginners to get comfortable on their boards.
  • Folsom Lake. Nestled at the base of the Sierra Foothills + featuring 75 miles of shoreline, this popular location offers one of the largest spaces for paddling in the region. Pro tip: Check the lake’s water levels before you go here.

Rentals

  • SUP California | 13385 Folsom Blvd | Mon.-Sun., 11 a.m.-6 p.m | $30+| With access to Lake Natoma, this paddleboard shop provides rentals with everything you’d need on the water — from a paddle to a personal flotation device. Guests can also reserve boards for days at a time.
  • Sacramento State Aquatic Center | 1901 Hazel Ave, | Mon.-Sun., 8 a.m.-7 p.m | Prices vary | This large facility offers rentals on paddleboards + courses on how to start paddling. Note: Rentals will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sat., April 30, and at 2 p.m. on Sun., May 1.

Tips

  • There are so many types of paddleboards — from ones designed for touring, racing + even fishing — that it can be difficult to know what to choose as a first-time buyer. We recommend starting off with an all-around board, or even one meant for yoga, as the greater width provides a greater sense of security on the water.
  • Bring a waterproof bag with you on your paddling adventure, so no belongings get soaked.
