🥓 Our most important meal of the day

A close-up of a waffle topped with fried chicken wings, butter, syrup, and fruit from Bacon and Butter in Sacramento.
Brunch, anyone? | Photo via @baconandbuttersac
Plan your weekend and pour those mimosas. We’ve compiled a whole bunch of brunch options — whether you’re on the hunt for fluffy eggs or stacked chicken and waffles — along with menu recs, pro tips, and an interactive map to track ‘em.

Editor’s note: All times listed are brunch-only.

Bacon & Butter | Wednesday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. | While the name alone is enough to entice most hungry brunch enthusiasts, this farm-to-table eatery in Tahoe Park is so good, Michelin described it as “Sunday morning at your mom’s.” Pro tip: Be prepared for a wait — bring a book.

Rivers Edge Cafe | Daily, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. | This cafe’s location is the perfect stop during a casual jaunt along the American River Parkway. What we’re ordering: The California Benedict + stuffed hash browns.

Kitchen 15 | Daily, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. | In Midtown around midday? Head over to this eatery and immediately order the chicken + waffles. Check out the weekly mimosa flavors and ask about the weekly barista creation.

VCs back startups for outsized returns. Regular people wait. But rule changes fixed that.

Take Revolut. In 2016, 433 people averaged a $2,370 stake. Today? That’s worth $1 million+, up 89,900%. No wonder 10,000+ people and the same VCs behind Uber and Venmo are taking the chance on Pacaso.

News Notes

Open

The BLVD, a 37,000-sqft entertainment venue and restaurant, is now open in West Sacramento with laser tag, 20 bowling lanes, 65+ arcade and VR games, and 30 TVs. The menu includes burgers, pizzas, appetizers, and milkshakes. It’s open Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m., and Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-1 a.m. (The Sacramento Bee)

Real Estate

Wowza. A custom-built home recently sold for $3 million in Land Park, making it the neighborhood’s most expensive residential listing ever. The four-bedroom, 3,447-sqft property on 11th Avenue boasts a pool, custom fountain, bocce ball court, and a casita above the garage. It sold for $600,000 over the asking price. (The Sacramento Bee)

Coming Soon

Three fun new businesses are opening up shop in Downtown Commons, including Sandbox VR coming this October with four holodecks for gaming. An Escapology escape room is also in the works and a Museum of Illusions will appear in spring 2026 with all kinds of mind-blowing exhibits. (The Sacramento Bee + ABC10)
Clarksburg’s historic Old Sugar Mill may be history. The Yolo County venue that houses 14 wineries and is used for weddings + special events is facing foreclosure after the recent death of its owner and operator. For now, several tenants are banding together to keep it open. (ABC10 + CapRadio)

Edu

The first day of school for roughly 40,000 students at Sacramento Unified School District is Monday, Aug. 18. If you’re back-to-school shopping, check out this list. If your kiddos have the back-to-school blues (understandable, really), do something fun with them this weekend around our city — here are some ideas.

Traffic

Right this way. Traffic patterns shifted earlier this week on Highway 50 as part of the ongoing Fix 50 Project. Modified eastbound lane configurations will remain in place through this fall just after the 15th Street off-ramp through to 48th Street. Motorists must drive 55 mph in the work zone. (ABC10)

Development

The city is seeking proposals to buy or lease the historic Hale Building on K Street as part of downtown’s ongoing revitalization. Ideally, the 1881 building would be turned into something that attracts foot traffic, especially on the ground-floor. Proposals can be submitted through Friday, Oct. 3.

Try This

All aboard. The California State Railroad Museum’s restored Granite Rock 10 steam locomotive is back in action after being out of service for extensive maintenance since October 2019. The 1942 train is now pulling excursion trains for 50-minute rides along the Sacramento Southern Railroad on select weekends — buy tickets.

Number

1,296,818. That’s how many passengers traveled through Sacramento International Airport (SMF) this past June, making it the busiest month in the airport’s history. Meanwhile, SMF’s ongoing $1.3 billion improvement project is trucking along — check out the progress on the new pedestrian walkway set to open next year.

Read

Need a summer read? Local author Shelley Blanton-Stroud’s newest novel, “An Unlikely Prospect,” hits shelves Tuesday, Aug. 19. Set in post-WWII San Francisco, it follows a female newspaper publisher investigating the VJ Day Peace Riot. Blanton-Stroud will host a book signing at the Sacramento History Museum on Thursday, Aug. 28.
