History
Under Folsom Lake rests the remnants of Mormon Island — a Gold Rush-era ghost town that was founded by the Mormon Battalion. It was destroyed by a fire in 1856, and during Sac’s historic drought in 2021, it became exposed.
Culture
Sacramento is home to the nation’s first entirely solar-powered sports arena, Golden 1 Center, which has received a platinum-level LEED certification.
Food
The rice grown in the Sacramento Valley is used in almost every sushi roll in America, according to the California Rice Commission.

Let’s eat. A new pop-up event dubbed Outside Bites is now up and running in the parking lot of a former auto shop in Midtown. The outdoor dining hub at J + 17th streets features 18 rotating food vendors showcasing Sac’s farm-to-fork energy. It’s open every Friday and Saturday, 5-11 p.m. (CBS Sacramento)
Plan Ahead
Speaking of farm-to-fork bites, tickets are on sale for Legends of Wine, the premier tasting event coming to the west steps of the California State Capitol on Thursday, Sept. 4. Attendees will sip on curated NorCal wines and enjoy samples from local restaurants.
Traffic
A plan is underway to improve safety along Oak Park’s busy Broadway corridor. The project will remove lanes between Martin Luther King Jr. + Stockton boulevards to narrow the road to two general travel lanes and add continuous bike lanes with plastic post buffers. Construction could begin next summer. (The Sacramento Bee)

Applications will open on Monday, Aug. 11 for the city’s 2026 Emerging Curators Fellowship. The funded program allows rising curators to develop + present two exhibitions at City Hall’s Robert T. Matsui Gallery, with support from a mentor.

The bridge will be replaced with a new multimodal crossing that will feature 12-ft paths for pedestrians and cyclists, plus wider traffic lanes for buses. The upper deck of the original 1911 bridge will be converted into a crossing that’s solely for pedestrians + cyclists. Construction should last about four years.
The project will cost ~$300 million and $275 million has already been secured. Sacramento and West Sacramento are finalizing cost-sharing agreements for the rest of the funding, and the city council will likely review those details in September.
