News Notes

Civic

In an effort to revitalize commercial corridors and foster economic growth, the city is awarding $1.7 million in grants + loans to 14 North Sac businesses to complete improvements, restore buildings, and purchase equipment. North Sacramento Business Investment Program awardees include King Cong Brewing and Sammy’s Restaurant — peep the full list.

Traffic

Highway 160 could someday become a boulevard. City Council is expected to approve $1.2 million in funding for a new study to reshape the highway and reconnect Old North Sacramento with the rest of the city. Proponents say the plan could shine the spotlight on the historically underserved area. (ABC10)

Coming Soon

A new restaurant called Crazee for Pasta will open on Sunrise Boulevard in Rancho Cordova this fall. The restaurant promises an “authentic taste of Italy” with a menu that includes appetizers like bruschetta, caprese, and burrata fresca, nearly 20 pasta entrees like spaghetti, fettuccine, and penne, and flatbread pizzas. (The Sacramento Bee)

Closing

Downtown’s short-lived breakfast + lunch spot, Flora & Fauna Provisions, is closing its doors likely by Wednesday, May 7. The farm-to-fork restaurant opened in early 2024 but its owners said delays during their debut caused financial strain that they were never able to overcome.

Tech

Sacramento has become the first US city to enforce bike lanes using cameras installed on SacRT buses — the same tech used to monitor cars parked illegally along bus stops. Drivers parked in bike lanes will receive warning notices this month and next, and violations with fines will start on Friday, June 13.

Travel

Starting Wednesday, May 7, you’ll need a REAL ID or valid passport to fly domestically. To apply for a REAL ID in California, you must gather identification + proof of residency documents, fill out an online application, and visit a DMV field office to finish the process. Here’s a step-by-step guide. (ABC10)

Concert

SoCal reggae rockers Dirty Heads have been added to the California State Fair’s jam-packed 2025 concert lineup. The “Lay Me Down” and “Vacation” singers will headline the main stage on Wednesday, July 16. All concerts are included with fair admission, or you can splurge for reserved seating separate from admission.

Legacy

The Sacramento Zoo’s beloved 9-year-old North American river otter, Kai, died unexpectedly. A zoo resident since 2017, keepers described Kai as a smart, stubborn, and “sassy, opinionated otter who knew exactly what she did and didn’t want in every situation,” from the fish she ate to her bedding preferences.

Sports

The Sacramento Kings will get a fresh start under the leadership of new general manager Scott Perry. But first, he’ll have to establish two main things for the franchise over the 6-month off-season. Hear from the local experts with Locked On’s daily, team-focused podcasts.

The Wrap

Hi, friends. I just returned from a family trip across the pond and I’m already daydreaming of afternoon tea (delicious evidence with my daughter below).

In the Sacramento area, solid places for tea service include Estelle’s Arden location and The Tea Nook in Lincoln. Classic Hippie Co. also offers high tea events on weekends. Do you know a great local spot for a spot of tea? Kindly drop me a note so I can keep this pinkie up.
