Sacramento has released its proposed budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, which begins Saturday, July 1. In the nearly 500-page document, the city’s budget allocates more than $1.5 billion for projects and operating costs while supporting 5,000+ full-time jobs.

Here are five key elements:

  • $8.78 million for the city’s Children’s Fund created by Measure L
  • $2.7 million for the creation of a “single role” EMT/paramedic program for the Sacramento Fire Department, allowing employees to choose one role instead of specializing in both
  • $15 million for affordable housing projects
  • $2 million to homeless and community outreach
  • $135 million in revenue generated from Measure U, the half-cent sales tax aimed specifically at funding city services

The city also expects to increase the salaries of its employees as 11 labor contracts will require a renegotiation by the end of 2023. Those funds are not reflected in the proposed budget.
Adoption of the budget takes roughly one month. Next, City Council and the Budget and Audit Committee will need to give their stamp of approval through a series of hearings. Officials expect the budget to be adopted by Tuesday, June 13.
