We found love in a less-than-hopeless place. | Graphic via 6AM City staff
For Valentine’s Day 2024, we made a map of local places where our readers have made memories. We asked for your help compiling everything from proposals to making friends. You did not disappoint.
You can explore these local love stories by clicking on the hearts, but there’s just a few love stories that we couldn’t wait to share:
“My husband and I met in 1998 while cruising on Broadway. We were 16 & 17 at the time! I had to use the payphone at Tower Records to call my mom because she paged me. LOL. While using the phone he and some friends approached us and it was history from there. 26 years later, we are still living it up!”
“The McKinley Park Rose Garden is where I told my husband that we were pregnant with our first baby! It will always hold a special place in our hearts and we love visiting with our now 9 month old son Steven.”
“Met my now husband at the corner of State Capitol Park, on N and 12. We were both state workers from different departments who just happened to take our breaks at the same time in the mornings. We noticed each other for weeks until he finally struck up a conversation. Six years of marriage and a decade of togetherness later, we always look back with so much happiness that we met each other on that park corner a decade ago.”

As production on Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film wraps up in Downtown Sacramento, we thought we’d quickly spotlight some of our favorite flicks that have filmed around the City of Trees.
“Almost Famous” — Cameron Crowe’s semi-autobiographical flick about a teen music critic in the 1970s shot the famous “Tiny Dancer” bus scene in Lincoln, just outside of Sacramento.
“xXx” — Get your head out of the gutter; this 2002 Vin Dielsel-led action thriller notably used Foresthill Bridge for that sweet stunt at the beginning where Vinny leaps out of a car after it flies over the bridge’s side.
“American Beauty” — The opening shot of this poorly-aged film (I can say that, I have a film degree — City Editor Jordan) sets its tone with suburban Sacramento aerials set to a voiceover from the increasingly-gross Kevin Spacey.
