We’re less than 10 days away from Super Bowl 58, where the San Francisco 49ers will face off against the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas. Although San Francisco isn’t exactly “local” for residents of Sacramento, three players on the 49ers roster are set to represent the City of Trees on one of the largest stages in the sporting world.
Arik Armstead — Defensive tackle
Armstead was a two-sport athlete at Elk Grove’s Pleasant Grove High School, playing both basketball and football. He attended the University of Oregon before being drafted by San Francisco in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. While injuries have plagued Armstead the past few years — missing 13 games over the past two seasons — he has solidified himself as a key part of the 49ers’ aggressive defensive line.
Brandon Aiyuk — Wide receiver
Before transferring to Arizona State, Aiyuk played football at Sierra College in Rocklin — the same city where he was born. Aiyuk is having the best season of his career so far with quarterback Brock Purdy under center, amassing 1,300+ receiving yards including this ridiculous catch during the NFC Championship Game.
Ross Dwelley — Tight end
While Dwelley won’t see the field on Super Bowl Sunday — he was placed on injured reserve following a high ankle sprain in Week 13 — that doesn’t mean we’re leaving him off the list. Dwelley attended Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, the same high school Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen attended a few years earlier.

Civic
Davis city officials approved a plan that will eventually lead to the banning of gas-powered leaf blowers throughout the city, along with other small off-road engines. The move is in response to California’s AB 1346, which limits the sale of new small off-road engines beginning in 2024. (The Aggie)

Did you know — since Sacramento’s inception in 1854, the city has had many names. Some are more memorable than others, like the oft-missed City of Trees moniker that paid homage to our urban forest — one that has been called the densest in the nation.
Each nickname tells a certain story about our home, like the unpopular Camellia City that references our status as the “Camellia City of the World.” That being said, not all of them ring true for locals.
Here are our favorite nicknames for the city we call home:
There are also a few names others have given us. You usually won’t catch a local referring to our city this way, but they are nonetheless part of our history.

Just want to share how proud of myself I am for officially being cigarette free for nine months now — minus one instance at my buddy’s bachelor party (although I feel I should be praised for just sticking to one in that kind of environment).
