Thirsty for knowledge? The city of Sacramento shared some fun tidbits about the city’s water supply — including where it comes from + what happens before it gets to your faucet.

Let’s break it down:
  • The city produces 80 million gallons of drinking water each day — enough to fill ~120 Olympic-sized pools.
  • 80% of our water supply flows from the American and Sacramento rivers, with the remainder coming from local groundwater wells.
  • The city has two water treatment centers — one for the Sacramento River near Richards Boulevard, and one for the American River right next to Sac State.
  • Over 1,600 miles of pipe deliver treated water to local businesses and homes.
  • Experts test for 121 different contaminants at 75 locations across the city.
