Sacramento, so hot right now

Beat the heat in Sacramento

With a heat wave this week and temperatures expected to reach up to 105° today, the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for our region until 11 p.m. tomorrow.

Don’t sweat — we’ve got a list of local resources and activities to help keep you both safe and cool all day long.

Go for a swim

The city operates 12 swimming pools, along with four wading pools for younger children. Swimming is also permitted in the American River, but be sure to stay safe by grabbing a free life jacket rental from the Sacramento Fire Department.

Check out a library

Libraries are a great way to cool down and keep yourself entertained with books, movies, and more. There’s even an interactive map to help you find the closest one (all locations in gray).

Cooling off is an art

Books not your thing? Consider a visit to one of our many museums, like the Crocker, MOSAC, or the Sacramento History Museum.

The city also has a great list of general tips, from staying hydrated to taking cold showers. Also, don’t forget about places like Gunther’s or Vic’s for locally made ice cream treats.

How to keep your car costs down in Sacramento

Did you know? According to AAA, car owners pour an average of $10,728 a year into their vehicles — a figure that includes fuel, repairs, and insurance.

Keep your cruises down Sacramento streets cost efficient with these tips:
  1. Shopping for a new car? Use AAA’s Driving Cost Calculator to see how much vehicle ownership will cost over the next five years.
  2. Check tire pressure regularly, since it can impact fuel economy and safety. Find free air pumps around town.
  3. Drive your car once a week for 30 minutes to keep your battery strong. Pro tip: Buy a personal jump starter and never ask a neighbor for a jump again.
  4. Consider investing in a dash cam, which can save you money in the long run by recording collision evidence and break-ins. The Ring Car Cam sends you real-time motion alerts, and the REDTIGER Dual Dash Cam records crisp 4K video.

From the editor
I’m here to ask for your help. I’m trying to contact Nasir Gebelli — the man who programmed “Final Fantasy III” in a Sacramento motel room. My search has led me to believe he still lives in the City of Trees, but the email address I found continues to bounce back.

If you or a loved one knows Nasir — and know he’s interested in telling his story — drop us a line.
