🏀 Having a ball

Truly, a fan experience fit for a king. | Photo by @victastic4672
Whether you’re a sports fanatic — or just look good in purple and black — Sacramento has no shortage of sports teams to support. Today, let’s focus on the Kings, who will tip off their 2025-2026 season next month. Save the date: Their home opener is on Friday, Oct. 24.

Sacramento Kings (NBA) | Est. 1923 as the Rochester Seagrams

Although the team has been around for 100+ years, the Kings have gone by many names, including more than 20 years as the Rochester Seagrams. The Kings finally settled down in Sacramento before the 1985-1986 season tipped off.

Where they play: Golden 1 Center
When the Kings win a game, expect chants of “Light the Beam,” followed by four purple lasers lighting up the sky above G1C.

Mascot: Slamson the Lion
Slamson is a 12-time winner of the NBA’s Most Valuable Cat Award and averages 338 hugs per appearance.

Team colors: Purple, slate gray, black
The Kings wore red and blue until 1994, when the team switched to their iconic purple — but almost ended up with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ burgundy and gold color scheme.

Iconic.

Wide Open Walls unveiled the “Legends of Hospitality” mural in Jazz Alley this week. The street art created by Ian the Painter honors four of Sacramento’s culinary legends: Randy Paragary, Biba Caggiano, Darrell Corti, and Lina Fat.

Organizers say these legends helped shine the spotlight on Sacramento’s farm-to-fork movement and shaped our city’s sizzling food scene.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month, Sacramento. If you’re looking for ways to celebrate, check out Noche Latina at Republic FC’s match on Wednesday, Oct. 1 or these California Museum events, including the annual Día de los Muertos Fiesta on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Hispanic Heritage Month is important to me because I am Chilean, and today happens to be Chilean Independence Day. So, please allow me to share this photo of little me at a patriotic school celebration dressed as a “huasa,” about to dance the “cueca.”
