With each mortgage payment, your equity grows — here’s what that can mean for homeowners. | Photo via Pexels
The Word: Equity. It’s the difference between your home’s current market value and what you still owe on your mortgage. Want to make it grow? From making home improvements to simply paying your mortgage each month, you’re building value over time.
You likely already know that you can tap into this equity to help cover expenses, like debt consolidation, education costs, medical bills, or even retirement. Here are a few options:
HELOC (Home Equity Line of Credit): Borrow against equity as needed, with flexible access over time and a variable interest rate.
Home Equity Loans: Receive a one-time sum with a fixed interest rate, usually repaid over five to 30 years.
Equity Sharing Home Loans: Offers borrowers a fixed-rate, interest-only loan, with lower monthly payments than a traditional loan. In exchange, you agree to share a portion of your home’s future value appreciation.
Birdies Social Club, a new “social playground” for brunch, golf, cocktails, and music, is now open in West Sac east of the ballpark. The spot features an indoor golf simulator by TrackMan, a big patio, and a menu of California comfort food like tacos, seafood, and burgers. Make reservations.
Coming Soon
The operators of Midtown’s Cantina Alley will soon debut Abuela’s Midtown, a cafe connected to the existing restaurant. Abuela’s will serve specialty coffee with a Mexican flair, including horchata lattes and cafe de olla boiled for hours. The menu will also feature homestyle dishes inspired by family recipes. (KCRA)
Concert
“Magnolia” rapper Playboi Carti will bring his “Antagonist Tour” to Golden 1 Center on Sunday, Oct. 12 — his first solo headline tour since 2021. Presale tickets are now available and general public tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10 a.m.
Seasonal
Ho, ho, holiday cheer is coming. The annual Miracle and Sippin’ Santa pop-up bars will return to many US cities this holiday season, including Sacramento. Miracle will set up shop at The Butterscotch Den and The Snug in Sac, plus Yager Lodge in Folsom. Sippin’ Santa plans to sleigh at The Jungle Bird.
Ranked
According to a study from Coworking Cafe, Sacramento is ranked No. 2 among top large US cities for economic growth. The rankings referred to our city as “a start-up engine with soaring business activity,” and touted its 166% surge in business applications as signaling “explosive entrepreneurial energy.”
Development
Powell’s Landing, a former Rodeway Inn that was converted into permanent housing for locals experiencing homelessness, is now open on Howe Avenue. The local nonprofit Hope Cooperative owns and operates the 70-unit complex and will provide behavioral health care and life skills training for its residents.
Try This
The city will host its Small Developer Academy tomorrow, Aug. 29, 9:30 a.m.-11:45 a.m., at City Hall Chambers and online for small developers, homeowners, or project managers planning to build in Sacramento. Experts will cover topics like zoning, project submittals, and the plan review process. Register in advance.

Sacramento County employee and Bay Area native LeRoid Davidjust scored big.
His artwork was chosen by FIFA and the Bay Area Host Committee as the official design of the FIFA World Cup ‘26 San Francisco Bay Area host city poster. His achievement was recognized at a board of supervisors meeting last week.
David’s design depicts the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges coming out of the fog and coming together to represent “the spirit of the Bay Area.” Smack in the middle is Levi’s Stadium — the venue where six FIFA matches will be held in June + July 2026.

Sacramento’s own Grammy Award-winning Deftones (yes, you got that question right in our music quiz because you are brilliant) dropped a new album dubbed “Private Music.”
The alt rockers will return home for the Aftershock Festival at Discovery Park this fall, headlining on Friday, Oct. 3. We’re thinking Sacramentans will fill that hometown performance, just like when the band sold out their concert at G1C earlier this year. Rock on.
