This watchful sculpture marks one end of the art walk at the corner of K and 13th streets. | Photo by SACtoday staff
When traveling on foot along K Street, you may have noticed a series of seemingly unrelated, nondescript statues perched atop nearby buildings. Those sculptures are actually part of an art walk known as Spirit Wings.
Conceived in 2015, the art installation is the brain child of a partnership between the Downtown Sacramento Partnership and Megan Blackwell + Phil Tretheway through a program called Bright Ideas — which used citizen-proposed ideas to create projects throughout downtown.
One end of the art walk is marked by this bird statue along the Sacramento River.

The piece’s avian motifs are meant to represent Sacramento’s relationship between its human and bird populations. Birds were often seen as important figures to our region’s Native American populations, including the Miwok and Maidu peoples.
We’ll give you the locations of sculptures at each end of the walk, but it’s up to you to find the five remaining pieces in between:
1000 Front Street — Near the Delta King
1200 K Street — Above the Hyatt Sacramento
