Shopping for a holiday, birthday, anniversary, or just because? We’re here to make your gift shopping a little less fearful + a little more cheerful.

For the coffee connoisseur

Gift your coffee lover something close by + caffeinated — we recommend a gift card from one of Sacramento’s local chains.
  • Pachamama Coffee — Shop from a variety of bagged coffee for an at home supply, or give a gift card that the recipient can use themselves at any of Pachamama’s six locations. If it’s good enough for Ryan Seacrest, it’s good enough for us.
  • Temple Coffee — Pay for your loved one to join the Coffee Club, which delivers freshly roasted coffee straight to their door. You can also shop coffee brewing supplies on its website.

For the gamer

Give the gamer in your life a blast from the past with a retro console from 1-Up Retro Video Games. Shop in person at its Downtown storefront (2325 J St.) or scan what’s in stock online.

If they’re 21+, we recommend gifting them a pint and pinball game at Coin-Op Game Room. We recommend hitting the arcade during happy hour, which is Tuesday-Thursday, 4-6 p.m., or Friday, 4-7 p.m.

  • Yesterday, ~3,000 people experienced power outages in Carmichael. SMUD customers sent in 240 reports to the utility provider, and the outage lasted ~1.5 hours. If you are a SMUD customer, you can track affected areas live on the site’s Outage Center map. (FOX40)
Development
  • The Lower Elkhorn Basin project could be completed as soon as this winter. An overflow area for the Sacramento River, this project is an effort to provide massive flood relief to the region during storms + excessive rain. (CapRadio)
Open
  • Curries & Biryanis officially opened on Monday, Dec. 17, in Folsom. In celebration, the all-you-can-eat Indian lunch buffet (157 Iron Point Rd.) is offering 15% off meals for guests until Thursday, Dec. 21.

Real Estate
  • The owner of Faces nightclub purchased the building at 2107 L St. in Midtown for $1.3 million. Built in 1940, the property was previously occupied by sports bar Costanza’s — however, no future plans for the space have been revealed. (Sac Biz Journal)
Closing
  • After 38 years of business, the Capital Athletic Club is closing its doors on Sunday, Dec. 31. The closure comes after hard times during the COVID-19 pandemic + the loss of parking availability due to development in downtown. (Sac Bee)

Your guide to hosting for the holidays in Sacramento

You know the vibe — holidays are supposed to give that warm + fuzzy feeling. Here are some tips to get people comfy.

🍾 Drinks

Set out some glasses, mixers + champagne for a build-your-own drink station. May we suggest a good ol’ White Linen?

As guests arrive, they can make a cocktail or mocktail + mingle before the real feast begins. We love using Juju’s Kitchen and Cocktails’ menu for inspo.

🕯️ Lighting

Use lamps + candles instead of overhead lights to diffuse some cozy, ambient lighting throughout your space.

For some eclectic choices, Scout Living + Antique Trove often have vintage lamps and unique candle holders that make a statement.

💐 Centerpiece

Instead of one giant floral arrangement on the table that gets in the way, consider breaking one up into multiple small jars or vases and scattering them throughout your space.

Treasured Days Florals, Relles Florist, and Kiyo’s Floral Design are the top-rated florists in town — do with this information what you will.

From the editor
My favorite gift of all time is my very first journal, given to me by my mother when I was probably seven or eight years old.

I wrote many terrible short stories + poems in that notebook, but it led me to where I am today — your City Editor (and with better grammar, hopefully). I’m so grateful I get to write for all of you. Thank you for reading. 💜
