City Editor Madeline here. I’m on a mission to find recipes that use produce sourced from right here in Sac.
Anyways, there’s quite literally nothing I hate more than a lengthy intro before a recipe, so I’m going to get straight into it — Butternut Squash Casserole.
Yes, it’s good. Yes, it’s easy — and yes, I’m definitely eating the leftovers as I write this, and it’s still so good.
The Midtown Farmers Market is a great place to find seasonal produce.

Where to find the best holiday displays in Sacramento
Old Sacramento Waterfront hosts festive lights, markets + more during holiday season. | Photo by @downtownsac
The days are getting shorter, the nights colder, and the drinks warmer. We all know what this means — holiday season is here, and in Sacramento, that’s synonymous with lights extravaganza.
Here are some of our favorite spots:
The Fab 40s | East Sacramento
You definitely don’t want to miss the Fab 40s’ light displays around this time of year. Pro tip: Park close by and walk through the neighborhood to avoid getting stuck in traffic.
Holiday District | Old Sacramento Waterfront
Every weekend through Dec. 31, stop by Old Sac’s Vintage Holiday Market for local vendors, train rides + a 60-ft fir.
Winter Wonderland | Fairytale Town
On the weekends of Dec. 9-10 + Dec. 16-17, kids can enjoy an encounter with Santa + the Grinch, faux snow, and festive decorations.
Imaginarium | Cal Expo
With 3 million lights spread out over 15 acres, this immersive light show takes the cake. Visitors can view a giant LED rose garden, storybook characters, mazes + more.
Anything off of this year’s Oprah’s Favorite Things list. We’re seeing: luxury flaky sea salt, all-weather boots, fleece robes, and a baked brie board.
I like to think I’d be a great future contender for the next generation’s Fab 5 — nothing wrong with being a little delusional to remedy the monotony of everyday life. 🤷
