Lace up your hiking boots, because we’ve compiled a hiking guide for the Sacramento area with nine routes and trails to help you plan your next adventure and experience breathtaking views.

Note: While parks and trails may be listed as open, we recommend checking park websites before visiting for further info, current trail conditions, and safest practices for the area.

Auburn

Hidden Falls Trail, 7587 Mears Place

  • Length: ~3.3 miles
  • Pet friendly: Yes, on leash

  • Parking fee: Varies
You can go chasing waterfalls at this popular + straightforward hike in Placer County. With its tranquil sights and sounds, the trail is generally considered perfect for families — reservations are currently required for weekends.

Quarry Road Trail, 150 Highway 193
  • Difficulty: 🥾🥾
  • Length: ~11.2 miles
  • Pet friendly: Yes, on leash
  • Wheelchair accessible: No
  • Parking fee: $10
This wide dirt path chases the majestic Middle Fork of the American River and features sheer limestone rock faces, and passes a cave known for its paleontological excavations.

Choose between four beautiful hikes in an inland canyon of the Northern Inner California Coast Ranges. If the nearly 1,200-ft elevation and rocky scramble on the mountain’s ridge sounds like too much, hikers have the option to do a 2-mile loop to the Old Homestead site instead.

Pilot Hill

Magnolia Ranch Trail, Coloma Road

  • Length: ~2.5 miles

Along Highway 49 with access to the American River, this easy-to-moderate looping trail provides scenic views of oak woodlands + rolling hills. The Cronan Ranch Trailhead is easy to access from this hike if you want to take in the vistas for a bit longer.

  • 3,000. That’s how many households worth of water the City of Roseville stored in aquifers below the city since January. It’s more groundwater than the city has ever stored before, helping the greater Sacramento region meet its goal of a more secure drinking water supply. (KCRA)

The latest class just graduated from Sacramento State, and boy are they in good company. Here some of the most notable Hornets to have graced the university’s halls.

🎓 Tom Hanks

One of Sac State’s more notable alumni is also arguably its most famous dropout. The actor transferred to Sac State after studying theater at Chabot College, but left after one year to intern at the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland.

🎓 Ryan Coogler

The Oakland-born director of “Black Panther” not only majored in finance, he played football for the Hornets as well, racking up 112 receptions (which ranks fourth all-time in Sac State football history) for 1,213 yards.

🎓 Lester Holt

The Cordova High School alum best known for his work on NBC Nightly News + Dateline NBC is another famous dropout. He left junior year to work at a San Francisco radio station, but was awarded an honorary degree from the school in 2015.
