Since 2021, the Sacramento Zoo and the city of Elk Grove have been working together on an effort to relocate the zoo and its inhabitants. At nearly 100 years old and under 15 acres, the zoo is no longer able to adequately serve the needs of its animals at its current William Land Park location.
A project of this scale — the nation’s first major park of any kind since Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 1998 — understandably takes a considerable amount of time to complete.
Opening day for the zoo is still on the far horizon, but in the meantime, we’ve rounded up everything we know about the zoo’s move to Elk Grove so far.
Elk Grove officials anticipate the cost of the zoo will be ~$1.3 million.
The planned site is a 70-acre plot of land at Lotz Parkway and Kammerer Road in south Elk Grove.
Seattle-based design firm SHR Studios has been chosen to lead the project.
Renderings were released in November 2022 showing cutting-edge facilities that include features like tent-cabins for overnight stays and immersive environments meant to recreate animal habitats like savannas.
Officials are hopeful construction could begin this year, but the project still needs an environmental impact review and a final financial plan before work can move ahead.
Visit the zoo’s website to stay up to date on the latest developments surrounding its move.

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, I’d like to shout out my college professor, Nate Schemel — one of my favorite educators. One thing I love about Nate is that every year on February 2 he spends all day posting quotes from “Groundhog Day” on social media — a legendary commitment to an incredible bit.
