Placer County approves expansion of Hidden Falls Regional Park

Last week, Placer County’s Board of Supervisors approved the first phase of a new project that will expand Hidden Falls Regional Park in Auburn. The effort has been more than two years in the making, with the board certifying an environmental impact review related to the park’s expansion back in March 2021.

Considering the park is already filled with fishing spots, picnic areas, and 30 miles of trails that can be used for hiking, horse riding, biking, and more, we thought it would be worth taking a look at what Phase 1 of the expansion — dubbed the Twilight Ride Access and Parking/Trailhead Project — will entail.

  • The total cost of the project is just south of $4 million — $3 million of which is being provided by the California Natural Resources Agency through a grant, while the remainder will come from county funds.
  • A parking lot will be constructed at 5345 Bell Rd. in Auburn, with space for 50+ cars and 20 equestrian stalls.
  • Guest amenities will be added to the area, including a ranger station, bathroom with drinking fountain, and picnic area.
  • Mounting blocks, hitching posts, and watering stations will be added for horses.
  • Eight new miles of trail between the 481 combined acres of Taylor Ranch and Kotomyan Big Hill Preserve will be accessible from the lot.
No date has been announced yet for when the project is expected to break ground or be completed — but we would love to hear what you’re most excited for in the meantime. You can also check out our hiking guide for other great outdoor adventures across the Sacramento region.

Have you seen a local building described as “LEED-certified” and wondered what that means? We won’t leed you on — here’s everything you need to know.

What is LEED?

LEED — which stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” — is an international green building system developed by the US Green Building Council (UGBC). The certification encourages more efficient buildings and communities through all phases of development, from new builds to maintenance.

Intrigued? Learn more about UGBC’s mission.

What are the levels?
