Where to shop internationally in Sacramento

KP International Market features groceries from 40+ countries. | Photo by SACtoday Staff
What happens when the Farm-to-Fork Capital is also one of the nation’s most diverse cities? We get exposure to a lot of amazing foods from around the world at local restaurants. But if you’re looking to recreate some of those dishes at home, it’s not always easy finding the correct ingredients.

Thankfully, we’ve rounded up four international markets in the Sacramento area for you. Time to stock up.

🛒 Oto’s Marketplace, 4990 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento

Since 1959, the Oto family has been a staple of Sacramento’s food scene. Few other grocers have the same high-quality meat, fish, and Japanese products that are available here — but you can also grab freshly-made bento boxes and sushi if cooking isn’t your thing.

🛒 KP International Market, 10971 Olson Dr., Rancho Cordova

In addition to foods from 40 different countries, KP Market also has the only Northern California location where you can buy products from Nature Republic — one of Korea’s top skin care companies.

🛒 La Superior Mercados, Various locations

These family-owned-and-operated grocery stores can help you whip up dishes from Central and South America. La Superior is City Editor Jordan’s go-to place to grab flank steak and Oaxaca cheese when he’s making carne asada fries at home.

🛒 Red Star International Groceries, 4760 Florin Rd., Sacramento

Infuse your dinner with the flavors of the Caribbean from this market. You’ll also discover hard-to-find products from West Africa and the Polynesian Islands.

Why do we have a road sign for Ocean City, MD?

SACtoday_ocean_city_3
Reader Erin sent us this photo of her with the Sacramento sign in Ocean City, MD. | Photo via Erin N.
Wow, we are overwhelmed by the responses we received from our readers about the Ocean City, MD sign on Highway 50, and thought we would share some of our favorite responses with you:

“Hi from a native Sacramento area resident living In Baltimore MD! I have pictures with both signs! The first time I went to Ocean City as a Maryland resident I had to see the sign! Growing up in Sacramento I never knew the ‘why’ until I looked it up and was living in Baltimore!” — Erin N.

“I’m originally from MD and I love seeing that sign on my work commute between Sac and Davis. I knew the history but I didn’t know why MD’s sign was so small and ours was so much bigger. We made a point to see the other sign last summer when we went to Ocean City. There is no way theirs is getting stolen based on it’s [sic] location above the busy highway, we could barely take a photo of it.” — Courtney H.

“My friend, Kevin and his son, Thomas, rode their bicycles carrying all their gear from Sacramento to Ocean City, Maryland, inspired by this sign. I would love to hear what other fun adventures were inspired by this ‘unnecessary’ signage.” — Tyler L.

We agree with Tyler, and would love to know if the sign has inspired any adventures of your own.
