5 local butchers feeding Sacramento

With turkey on many of our minds this time of year, we thought it a better time than any to round up five local butcheries that are helping make Sacramento’s food scene a cut above the rest.

🥩 V. Miller Meats
4801 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento
Tues.-Sat., 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

This craft butchery — whose owner was once the lead chef instructor at Le Cordon Bleu — offers pasture-raised beef, pork, and lamb, as well as fresh sausages and deli meats made the old-fashioned way with the seam technique. Pro tip: Call in to place your Thanksgiving turkey orders.

🥩 Taylor’s Market
2900 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento
Mon.-Sat., 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sun., 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

The official headquarters of Team USA for the 2022 World Butcher’s Challenge is notable for its specialty cuts and in-house recipes, like its stuffed pork roast that dates back to 1962. Pro tip: Take one of its butchering classes.

🥩 Red Sea Food Market & Halal Meat
6968 65th St. E., Sacramento
Mon.-Sun., 9 a.m.-7 p.m.

Famous for the spices and snacks it imports from the Middle East, this market also provides a wide selection of halal goat, lamb, beef, and chicken.

🐟 Sunh Fish Company
1313 Broadway, Sacramento
Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sat., 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.; Sun., 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

The leading distributor of fresh fish in the Sacramento region is your best bet for high-quality, sushi-grade fish.

🥩 Mad Butcher Meat Co.
6480 Florin Perkins Rd., Sacramento
Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

The family-owned shop is known for its hard-to-find cuts like A5 Wagyu beef and wholesale-priced meat packs (think: 5 lbs of New York steak for $41.99).

Need kosher meat? Check out grocery stores like Trader Joe’s, put an order in with Einstein Kosher Catering, or reach out to the Chabad Center of Sacramento for more info.

Well, except for towns — only one answer was for a trail outside of Sacramento proper. Talk about taking pride in the City of Trees.

THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Matt.

Editor’s pick: 64% — that’s the proportion of respondents who are in favor of permanent daylight saving time after the question we posed last week, with 16% saying they want permanent standard time. My favorite response, though, comes from Dan P. who wrote in to tell us this:

“Whatever keeps me from having to reprogram my microwave, oven, wall clock, every watch and pocket watch I own...”

Yes, Dan. Yes.
