Remembering The Beat, a record store that spun in Sac for 31 years
Sacramentans love to wax poetic about The Beat, a former record store on J Street. | Photo courtesy of @zavedkhanphotos
Not too long after the loss of homegrown music chain Tower Records in 2006, another not so good vibration was picked up by the Sacramento community: The Beat record store lost its lease and had to close after 31 years of business in 2013. The space then became a BevMo!, which operates at 1700 J St. to this day.
Following the closure, The Beat flipped to its B-Side and began selling its products online through retailers like Amazon and eBay. However, it’s unclear how long that lasted, with the company’s last post coming in July 2013.
We want to know: With 31 years of giving space to Sac’s music scene, there’s bound to be some deep cuts. What’s your favorite memory of The Beat?
THE WRAP
Today’s issue was written by Matt.
Editor’s pick: If you’re in need of sprucing up your home, I’d recommend checking out Midtown Bliss, which sells used and vintage decor near the Sac Co-op. I can’t get over the wood dining and side tables I picked up there. OK, maybe I’m a sucker for mid-century modern design, but who isn’t?
