This week, Sacramento launched the first âSacramento Music Census.â The aim of the project is not only to better understand the lives of our regionâs musical community, but also to review the policies and regulations that impact it.
Led by a partnership between the Office of Arts and Culture and Sound Music Cities, a music consultant firm, the program is funded through the Measure U tax, and is part of the cityâs âCreative Edgeâ plan. According to data provided by the city, Sacramentoâs music industry produced ~$113 million in sales from its 1,400 jobs in 2020.
Today, weâve got three key takeaways for who should take the cityâs census. Spoiler: You donât have to know âWonderwallâ on guitar.
đŒ Who should take it
Anyone age 18 and older who contributes âmusic-related workâ â whether itâs paid, volunteer, creative, administrative, or even owning a venue â should take the census if they live in Sacramento, El Dorado, Placer, Yolo, Sutter, Nevada, or Yuba counties.
đŒ What kinds of questions are being asked
The anonymous census asks demographic questions (race, gender, etc.) as well as questions regarding diversity, equity, and life as a musician in Sacramento and its surrounding areas.
đŒ What will this be used for
The information gathered from the census will be used to inform decisions regarding a swath of potential improvements to music-related businesses, like insurance and security requirements, permitting, and creative development projects.

City editor Jordan here đ â imagine my surprise when I turned on Netflixâs latest horror-thriller offering, âThe Midnight Club,â only to be immediately greeted by a title that read âSacramento, 1994.â
The series (without spoiling anything) follows a group of terminally-ill teens who meet up every night to tell each other scary stories, including Ilonka, who hails from Sacramento. Created by Netflixâs resident horror expert, Mike Flanagan (âHaunting of Hill Houseâ, âMidnight Massâ) the show brings us the latest silver screen adaptation of our city, joining the ranks of âEven Stevensâ and âThe Mentalist.â
Editorâs pick: On Sunday, my son and I went to the Galleria at Rosevilleâs newly opened Round 1 Entertainment and had an absolute blast â until we passed by the LEGO store on our way to the car and I had to restrain myself from this impulse purchase. Iâm still tempted to go back.
