Each year, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed as a federal holiday on the third Monday of January — Jan. 16 this year . The theme for this year is “Cultivating a Beloved Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems,” according to The King Centera nonprofit founded by MLK’s wife, Coretta Scott King, to continue Dr. King’s legacy.

If you have time to dedicate to our community, here are three local volunteer opportunities:

  • Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services | Volunteer at food distributions events or help sort, bag, and box fresh produce for the community.
  • Midtown HART | Check in and be an ear for guests at the nonprofit’s respite center for those experiencing homelessness as you serve coffee and light snacks and facilitate the receipt of clothing donations.
  • Habitat for Humanity | Build and restore homes for low-income families, seniors, and veterans in the community.
