The unofficial start to summer in Sacramento has returned. Concerts In the Park — the Golden State’s biggest free music festival — is back at Cesar Chavez Plaza beginning at 5 p.m. today to kick off 12 weeks of jams with 50+ performances.
Since the city’s longest-running outdoor music series — spanning 25+ years — has been on hold the past two years, we thought it appropriate to drop in and give a little refresher of what to expect.
Bands 🎸
Each week until July 29 (except the week of 4th of July), 4-5 acts will take the stage to rock the River City from5-9 p.m., with local band Red Voodoo headlining tonight’s opening ceremonies. Artists span all genres — from hip-hop to folk — with future acts including some larger names like The Expendables + Nappy Roots.
Booze 🍻
Drinks will be made available for purchase at the beer + wine garden (which will also have cocktails and seltzers) once attendees 21+ snag a wristband upon entry. Want to keep the party going? Concertgoers can head to participating bars — like Tiger or Republic — after the show ends for CIP Afterpartydrink specials.
One more thing — while, yes, tickets are free + not required, RSVPing through Eventbrite will score you a chance to win a $50 gift card to a restaurant Downtown.

Editor’s pick:Last night, I went and saw “Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” at the Esquire IMAX Theatre — just as I have every Marvel Studios film since “Guardians of the Galaxy.” I really think there is no better place in the city to see superhero shenanigans, especially on opening night when the crowd is always so hyped.
