6 hot dog spots in Sac + a secret staircase

Hello Friday.

July 01 2022

Let’s be frank 🌭

Sun’s out, buns out — hot dog buns, that is. From community grillouts to baseball game brats, summer really is the season of the hot dog. That’s why we’ve rounded up six local spots to get your frank fix.

This one’s for all my dogs out there. | Photo via Unsplash

Two Hands Corn Dogs, 2648 Watt Ave.

  • This Georgia-based eatery serves Korean-style hot dogs — known as gamja-hot dogs — that closely resemble corn dogs.
  • Pro tip: Pair a potato dog with some kimchi fries + a horchata slushie for a flavor bonanza.

Lions Hotdog Shack, 4621 24th St.

  • Located inside Fountainhead Brewing Co., their frank yet effective menu pairs perfectly with a craft beer.
  • Pro tip: Vegan hot dogs are also available.

Parker’s of Santa Cruz, 1605 Douglas Blvd., Roseville

  • Honoring its origins as a Boardwalk hot dog stand that started in the 1940s, Parker’s has been cooking up dogs, chili + fries in the area for ~25 years.
  • Pro tip: If you’re feeling extra hungry — or just a little crazy — you can attempt their 5 lb chili cheese dog like City Editor Jordan did.

Wiener Works, 5207 Madison Ave.

  • This no-muss, no-fuss hot dog joint known for its large servings is home to the Wonderdog — a 14-inch hot dog carefully laid onto a loaf of soft french bread.
  • Heads up: Pastrami dogs are currently not available due to pandemic-related shortages.

Beer Dogs, 7032 Sylvan Rd., Citrus Heights

  • Specializing in “Farm-to-Bun” gourmet hot dogs, its menu also contains traditional bar fare, sandwiches + a rotating list of beers on tap.
  • Pro tip: Order a Sonoran Dog — made with tomato, onion, jalapeno, chipotle aioli & oaxaca beer cheese — and thank us later.

The Hotdogger, 129 E St., Davis

  • Serving up dogs to hungry college students since 1984, The Hotdogger is open late into the night seven days a week so Aggies can gobble up their locally-sourced franks + buns.
  • Pro tip: They can also be found at the Davis Farmer’s Market from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturdays.

Not your grandma’s wicker 👀

We’d never guess that these chic patio chairs are made from recycled water bottles. | Photo provided by Outer

If you hear the word “wicker” and think of a frumpy, broken piece of furniture, you’re not alone — but thanks to Outer, a company that crafts stylish outdoor furniture with an eye toward sustainability, it’s time to rethink wicker.

By using recycled water bottles as source material, Outer has created eco-friendly wicker furniture that not only looks ultra-modern, but is durable enough to last a decade.

Bonus: Each cushion uses triple memory foam for max comfiness.*

POST OF THE DAY

The stuff of fairy tales 🦄

Instagram

📸 @foodielandsac

If you believe in magic, check out this Unicorn dog from Ghostix.

It’s a Korean-style corn dog  — which we just learned is called a gamja-hot dog — coated in sugary goodness + filled with rainbow-colored cheese for a crunchy-gooey experience of fairy tale proportions.

Don’t worry — you’ll be able to savor this street snack for yourself at Sac’s FoodieLand Night Market, which runs Aug. 19-21 + Sept. 2-5 at Cal Expo.

THE WRAP

Editor’s Pick: All this talk of hot dogs has me so excited to grill some of my own on Fourth of July, but I am so sad Cal Expo had to cancel their fireworks show. It’s really been quite the roller coaster of emotions writing today’s newsletter.
