Hello Saturday.

August 13 2022

Living life sprightly

Whether you’re a recent retiree or someone enjoying life after 62, we hope you’re finding the best out of your golden years.

However, we recognize that it’s not always easy to find things to do in the city or make new friends as we get older — so we’re taking a look at senior resources across Sacramento county that are sure to have something to make even the Golden Girls green with envy.

The center is located in James Marshall Park. | Photo by SACtoday Staff

🏓 Sacramento

One of the first places of its kind in California, the Hart Senior Center has been enriching the lives of older adults since 1961. Its name honors Ethel MacLeod Hart, who bequeathed her entire estate to the City of Sacramento for the “use, enjoyment, and comfort of senior citizens” after her death at age 104.

Located in Midtown at 915 27th St., the center offers classes + activities, like “Gentle Vinyasa Yoga,” social ping pong events, and line dancing lessons. It also hosts various workshops and groups for poetry, life history writing, book clubs, and art activities. Learn more.

Want something a bit more active? Consider picking up pickleball + playing at one of these eight locations across Sac.

🎨 Elk Grove

The Senior Center of Elk Grove is a nonprofit organization that’s based on a membership program. It provides weekly activities — like writing groups, artist studios, ukulele practice + more — alongside bingo nights, scrabble competitions, and mahjong meet-ups.

The center also provides a space for support groups to meet, such as a Parkinson’s group that meets every third Wednesday of the month.

🌹 Roseville

Located within Maidu Regional Park — which is named in honor of the Nisenan Tribe — the Maidu Community Center’s senior wing offers several services + programs, such as chair fitness classes, “Never Too Late Aerobics,” gardening clubs, and more. Find it at 1550 Maidu Dr.

THE WRAP

Editor’s Pick: I’m loving this pic that the National Weather Service shared of a “pot of gold” rainbow near Tahoe. Perhaps it’s just me, but even the evergreens seem pleasantly surprised by the dreamy view. 🌈
